Finding Ornate Gold Mirrors!

Finding Ornate Gold Mirrors!

Hello loves! Today I am writing a much long overdue post! When I began my wedding sign rental business Details and Swirls, I fell in love with ornate gold mirrors. I started collecting beautiful mirrors to add to my rental collection, and this obsession grew and quickly took over the decor in our home. Along the way I’ve picked up many tips and tricks on where to search for these pieces, and how to find them for the best price! Today I am walking you through exactly how and where I find all of my beautiful mirrors!

Facebook Marketplace

This is my NUMBER ONE secret when it comes to finding vintage gold mirrors! Believe it or not, there is an overwhelming number of mirrors on facebook marketplace. Now, this approach definitely takes some time and effort. If you are on the hunt for mirrors I suggest checking facebook marketplace around 3 times a day consistently, and reach out immediately when you see something you are interested in. These pieces go very quickly, and I am still kicking myself on some mirrors that I missed! Browsing facebook marketplace definitely takes some imagination. Many times the photos are poor, but you have to picture how the piece would look once it is cleaned and in a well lit space! Half of my mirrors (especially my really big ones) are all from facebook for a fraction of the price! I once found a $1,000 mirror I was eyeing for months online for just under $300 on marketplace (coming to my rental collection soon!), just keep checking consistently and they will appear!

Antique Stores

The next place I shop for my mirrors are antique and vintage stores. I have purchased 3-4 of my mirrors from antique shops and there are pros and cons. The pros are the quality and history. All of my antique store mirrors are my best quality pieces, and they most often come with a story of how old the piece is and the origination. The main con is the price. Unfortunately many mirrors at antique stores are quite expensive, so while you may be able to barter, you probably will not get the cheapest mirror at a vintage store.

Online

While I absolutely love searching marketplace and antique stores for mirrors, sometimes I do not have months to wait for the perfect piece to magically appear. Luckily after lots and lots and lots of digging, I’ve found numerous beautiful mirrors online (many of which I own)! Some are more expensive than others, and I will list them below based upon price!

Mirror Wall – Design Tutorial

Mirror Wall – Design Tutorial

Hello friends and Happy New Year! I am coming to you with my first post of 2020! We are finally settling into our house a bit more, and starting to complete each room. My office has been on the top of my list to complete since we moved in! Now that wedding season and holiday season is officially over, I have the time to jump in and finish my office. First thing is first, I painted the entire room (Collingwood BM) and prepped the space to begin my mirror wall design!

From the moment I saw my office, I knew I wanted to create a mirror gallery wall using my ornate gold rental mirrors I have as part of my Details and Swirls wedding rental inventory. What appeared to be a daunting and time consuming project, ended up being fairly simple and easy! Below I mapped out the steps and instructions I came up with for mapping out and installing my wall!

Step 1: Map

I measured my wall (10 feet wide x 7 feet tall) and took to the Pottery Barn Room Planner to map out my design. If you haven’t used this before, it is AMAZING! I plugged in the dimensions on the room, added icons with the dimensions of all the mirrors I wanted to use, and dragged them around to determine a layout. This created a perfect map of my wall with the exact dimensions! If you are wondering why the mirrors are labeled it is because all of my rental pieces have “names”!

Step 2: Map Out On Floor

Now that I knew the dimensions and pieces I was using, I wanted to map everything out in real life. I used the floor in my office for this step. Since the width of the floor is the same as the width of the wall, I measured 7 feet on the floor to mimic the height, and laid my pieces down. Basically creating the exact dimensions of my wall, except on my floor.

Step 3: Equip All Mirrors For Hanging

Ensure all mirrors have proper hanging equipment. I used this wire and these hooks to ensure sturdy hanging. I recommend using wire suited for weight 50lbs and over!

Step 4: Take Your Mirror Measurements

To ensure proper hanging height, you need to keep in mind the distance between the hanging wire and the height of your mirror. After I attached the wire on each mirror, I put the mirror face down to measure. I lifted the wire from the center until there was no more give (this is how it will sit on the hook). Then I measured from the top of the mirror to that high point on the wire (let’s say 10 inches for this example). This means that whatever height I want the mirror to sit at on the wall, I need to place my hook 10 inches below that. Complete this step for all mirrors noting down the wire height for each!

Step 5: Hang!

Now it is time to hang! I started with my center mirror, because the placement of every other mirror is based off of my center. Since I had all of my pieces proportionally laid out, I simply measured from the “ceiling” how high to hang my center mirror (including the wire height from Step 4). That’s it! Once I had that measurement, I took to the real wall, measured that number, placed my hook up, and hung! Now that the center is up, I moved onto the other mirrors by simply holding them in their place on the wall, marking the top, and placing the hanger at the appropriate wire measurement. Simple and Easy! The beauty in doing a mirror wall is the measurements do not have to be exact. As long as the mirror is held up in the area you want it, you just mark, measure for the wire, and hang!
